Imaging – 2 [13/01/2020] [ week 2 ] Jai Ranjit

Today’s class we started with learning about what is Indesign. Photoshop is for editing pictures, Illustrator is for creating vectors and Indesign is for typography, editing pictures and creating vectors. We started off with making a list of different types of publications. They are books, magazines, flyers, leaflets, brochures, zines, comics, newspapers, e books, posters, posters, presentations, cards, banners, billboards, pamphlets, placards, placecards, postcards, flashcards, journal, annual, calendar etc.

Purpose of INDESIGN? 1) To have a precised production , 2) Creating a layout, typography, 3) helps in creating a publication.

In indesign one page consists of two spreads and four surfaces. ( 3 sheets – 6 spreads – 12 sides ). While making a document for printing it should be in the multiple of 4.

  • ctrl D – To place an image
  • margins – kept for binding, negative space, gives an even distribution.
  • bleed – area extending past the edge of the page
  • slug – an external area outside the page , carries information for the printer.
  • Primary text frame – layout of the text of the document remains constant.
  • Page tool – resizes the page.
  • Scissor tool / eraser tool – same as illustrator
  • Column gutters – spacing between two columns [ pink lines – margin , purple lines – gutter ]
  • line tool – makes lines
  • type tool – type and type on a path
  • rectangular frame tool – to select a picture
  • pencil tool, smooth tool
  • View – overprint view [ helps in making the image look clear]

SHORTCUTS FOR OBJECTS :- L – ellipse , V – selection tool , A – Direct selection tool , B – Transformation of an object , P – pen tool , Space bar – helps to drag

Towards the end of this session we learnt 50% of what indesign is, we were still trying to discover and explore the software. The shortcuts are helpful, reduces time and makes work easier.
