Today’s class we started discussing about Indian Civilization. In 10000 BC the scattered settlements started.

The oldest known civilization in the Indian subcontinent is the Indus Valley Civilization. It existed in both Chalcolithic and Deccan Age . Archaeologists have found remains of the first modern city MEHERGARH . Mehergarh is today’s Pakistan , it is the center of the Indus Valley Civilization. Indus valley civilization had more money coming in compared to malwa. Important aspect of Indus valley civilization is the urban planning.

CHALCOLITHIC AGE :- In this age bronze was melted for the first time. It was an era of transition between the stone tool age to the metal age. 2 examples of chalcolithic age in India are :- 1] JORWE CULTURE , 2] MALWA CULTURE

Jorwe culture :- Deccan chalcolithic, the city planning is better than Malwa culture but not as good as Indus valley civilisation. Early phase is from 1600 – 1000 BC and late phase is from 1000 – 700 BC . Horse agriculture was similar to Malwa but it had some refinements. They were trading with Karnataka for gold and ivory , coastal areas for haemetite and fish.

Malwa culture :- 1600 – 1300 BC .The culture of malwa has been clearly influenced by rajasthani culture , agricultural evidences , malwa culture pot , farming / farming tools. Food – wheat, jowar, legume, rice, animal husbandry etc.

DIAMABAD :- It is the largest settlement in the Deccan Chalcolithic period. It has a fortified wall that indicates someone living in the city needs protection. It shows the presence of a chief or a king.

Harappan civilisation :- the two artefacts of the harappan civilisation were 1) statues of dancing women and 2) priests with beard. Harappan script is the only script which till date hasn’t been discovered.
