As a continuation of the previous session in today’s class we discussed about the Mughals, Portugese and Renaissance.
- The first people after Mughals who entered India were the Portugese
- Vasco Da Gama was the first Portuguese to enter India.
- Renaissance [ means re-birth ][14th century – 17th century]
- Venice, Florence, Milan became trading spots
+ Space Race was the race between America and Russia + Piri Reis was an auto man navigator + The Old World consists of Europe, Asia, Russia, Chinese and Wasteland + Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian merchant, explorer and navigator + English went towards the West and Portugese went towards the East + Fort William [in Calcutta] was the first place where the English established their foothold in India
“DIVIDE ET IMPERA” means divide and rule
- Subsidiary Alliance :- Subsidiary Alliance is a system developed by the East India Company. It solved the problem of ruling a nation which is under the rule of a king.An Indian ruler entering into a subsidiary alliance with the British had to accept British forces in his territory and also agreed to pay for their maintenance.
- Doctrine of Lapse :- means if you don’t have a legitimate male heir the holdings of your husband will go to the government.
- The British soldiers were called the red coats.
